Manchester United’s Offseason

Despite qualifying for the Champions League with their 3rd place finish, Manchester United finished 33 points behind Liverpool and 15 points adrift of Manchester City.

The 2019-20 Premier League season showcased many cracks in the United side. To begin with, the defense was shaky at times giving up late goals resulting in dropped points. Secondly, their star goalkeeper, David De Gea also showed signs of weakness. Finally, in the closing matches of the season, specifically, in the Europa League quarterfinals and semifinals, United struggled to put the ball in the net. The likes of Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and Anthony Martial did not lack for scoring chances, just struggled to score. In the quarterfinal, United had 14 shots on target, only to have to wait for an extra time penalty from Bruno Fernandes to defeat Copenhagen. The semifinal was not much different. With 7 shots on target, United was only able to manage a 9th minute penalty from Fernandes before falling to Sevilla, 2-1.

With rivals Chelsea, who finished behind United on goal difference only, making five big signings and cross-town rivals Manchester City heavily linked with Lionel Messi, United have been pretty stagnant in their summer business.

As usual, Manchester United have been linked with multiple transfer targets. In fact, it seems like there is a new name thrown about on a daily basis. With the main target being Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, as of September 1, most outlets are reporting that United have yet to make an offer. This would be a major upgrade to United’s attack and just might give them the needed boost to add to the goal tally.

Transfer dealings changed a bit for United on Tuesday, September 1, as rumors are suggesting that Ajax’s Donny van de Beek had a medical in advance of his transfer to United. This would create a dynamic force in the midfield with Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, and Bruno Fernandes.

While the signing of van de Beek would be a great addition for United, things are still weak in the central defense. United are desperate for partner for Harry Maguire to shore up the middle of the defense. Rumors have swirled around RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano. The young French defender did a number on Diego Costa when Leipzig met Atletico Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinal. This young talent is exactly what United look for; however, this seems to be strictly a rumor. United fans can only hope to add this force to their defense.

United are full of world-class players and since January of 2020, have shown that they are a top four squad. By adding to their attack and strengthening their defense, United will be more likely to provide more of a challenge to Liverpool and Manchester City.
